HMPV vs Covid-19: Understanding the key differences and dangers
2020: A year full of fear and uncertainty, dominated by the relentless terror of viruses. The world held its breath, grappling with an invisible enemy. Now, as we adapt to the ‘new normal,’ the cycle continues—each year bringing the emergence of yet another viral challenge.”
This time it’s HMPV – human metapneumovirus. The name has a reason behind it, the metapneumovirus INVOLVES humans as hosts. But is it the same as covid -19?
COVID-19 is the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. It usually spreads between people in close contact.
The Answer is NO. This virus shows symptoms of a mild cold, mostly in infants and immunodeficiency patients. That’s why precautionary measures are recommended to avoid this virus.
The virus accounts for 4-16% of acute respiratory infections globally, with cases usually peaking between November and May.
Precautionary Measures-
- Practice hygiene daily:- wash your hands and face daily, and use sanitizers.
- Avoid close contact: Maintain a distance from people with colds and coughs. You might also be affected by them.
- Boost Immunity:- This virus affects those with poor immunity, including nutrients, fruits, and greeny leafy veggies.
According to research done on the basis of China – About 5 to 25% of the acute pediatric lower respiratory tract infections are associated with HMPV. Meanwhile, China said the rate of infections in the northern part of the country is declining. “The human metapneumovirus is not a new virus, and has been with humans for at least several decades,” said Wang Liping, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, during a press briefing by China’s National Health Commission.
This is a serious outbreak beginning in China and spreading its legs to other countries like India, Nepal etc.
We never want to ruin our 2025 year with lockdowns, quarantines, and social distancing. A warning bell has been announced and we should fight with full immunity another wave of the virus before it becomes an epidemic.
Conclusion: A Call for Vigilance Against HMPV
The emergence of HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) highlights the ever-present challenge of viral infections in our interconnected world.
While it differs significantly from the devastating impact of COVID-19, its potential to cause harm, especially to vulnerable populations such as infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, cannot be underestimated.
HMPV is not a new virus, but its increased prevalence and the global nature of its spread remind us of the importance of staying informed and prepared.
Before the HMPV virus gets in your area, incorporate all the precautionary measures as soon as possible. Your health is our priority.
Symptoms like fever, cough, and congestion may persist for a few days, while recovery can take longer in people with weakened immune systems or chronic conditions.
If you see any symptoms in your body, then immediately consult the nearest hospital/doctors for regular-checkups.
